Research Associate — Chemical Reaction Networks

March 25, 2011 § Leave a comment

Applicants are invited for a PhD-level Research Associate position in the Control and Power Research Group, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The position is available, following the recent award of a grant by the Leverhulme Trust to Dr. David Angeli (Imperial College London) and Dr Murad Banaji (University of Portsmouth) to undertake research on conditions for oscillation in chemical reaction networks.

The aim of this project is to investigate structural conditions (in terms, for instance, of properties of graphs associated with the reaction network) which either prevent or allow oscillation in chemical reaction networks. This is a challenging research topic as there is no general theory able to explain the origin of oscillations in chemical reaction networks. On the other hand, such questions are especially important in the light of developments in systems and synthetic biology.

Applicants should have a PhD (or proven research experience/equivalent) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Mathematics, or be close to achieving the degree. Applicants will be expected to apply tools from the theory of dynamical systems and bifurcation theory, linear and exterior algebra and computational graph theory to problems arising in the theory of chemical reaction networks. Thus applications should either have some experience in these areas or should be able to demonstrate that they can acquire the necessary skills.

Applicants should also have the ability to perform effectively under pressure and time constraints, possess good personal organisational and time management skills, pay close attention to detail, and have effective interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with a wide variety of people.
