The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab is seeking a Synthetic Biologist (02527) in Laurel, MD.
Responsibilities:
Synthetic biologist in the Research and Exploratory Development Department. Potential candidates will be leaders in the field and will provide insight and expertise on challenges facing APL sponsors in the area of engineered biological systems. Candidates will also contribute to ongoing efforts in microbiology, cell biology, and bioengineering.
Lead and contribute to research efforts in a laboratory setting, providing expertise in experimental design and execution, as well as project
management. Ideal candidates will be able to successfully devise synthetic biological systems that address critical national security needs.
Manage technical staff, equipment, and facilities to achieve project goals.
Communicate the importance of research being proposed and conducted, as well as the approach, fabrication and testing of designed systems to APL management and sponsors.
Write grants and engineering project proposals for sponsor agencies.
Qualifications:
Required:
Ph.D. in a biological science field, with at least 2 years of relevant postdoctoral experience. Demonstrated record of achievement in synthetic biology or bioengineering, including relevant publications. Experience with construct design and systems integration to support design and refinement of engineered systems. Demonstrated technical skills and knowledge in cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry and/or biophysics. Excellent organizational skills, as well as proficiency with relevant molecular biology software and databases are required. Demonstrated record of teamwork for the purpose of accomplishing scientific goals, and excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability to function as both a leader and a participant in dynamic, multidisciplinary teams.
Desired:
Experience withcomputationally-based modeling. Experience with management of people and facilities, demonstrated record of success in writing grant or engineering project proposals. Industry experience.
